Why Sintra Is So Popular

Sintra is one of Portugal’s most visited destinations, and for good reason. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique blend of architecture, nature, and history. Colorful palaces rise above dense green forests, and winding paths lead to viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic coast.

Because of its beauty and proximity to Lisbon, Sintra receives an incredible number of tourists every day, especially during the high season.

The Best Time to Experience Sintra

While many visitors arrive early in the morning, one of my favorite times to explore Sintra is around 6:00 pm, when most of the tour groups begin heading back to Lisbon and Cascais.

The atmosphere changes completely.

The streets become quieter, the golden light makes the palaces and hills look even more magical, and the town feels much more relaxed and authentic. Restaurants start to fill with locals and travelers staying overnight, and Sintra becomes even more charming.

However, if your schedule allows, spending one night in Sintra gives you a completely different experience. You’ll be able to explore the palaces early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when crowds are smaller, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the town after most day-trippers leave.

With more time, you can also explore nearby spots like coastal viewpoints, hiking trails, and hidden gardens that many visitors miss.

From Cascais

Sintra is also a popular day trip from Cascais. The drive takes around 30 minutes, making it easy to combine both destinations.

It’s also the best way to explore more parks, hiking trails, and nearby coastal viewpoints the following day.
